In collaboration with Facebook, the World Surf League (WSL) has confirmed that all Championship Tour events and Big Wave Tour events will be broadcast live on the WSL Facebook Page, enabling followers to experience the sport's top moments together.
This partnership will allow more interaction between fans on a global level. Because event schedules can be very unpredictable and highly dependent on wave forecast, Facebook is one of the fastest methods when bridging the gap between athletes and viewers.
The 2017 Championship Tour season will kick off in Australia during the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast from 14th to 25th March 2017.
Jordy Smith, South African surfer said: "One of my favourite things about surfing is that it's always evolving, the equipment, the approach, the progression. It's great to know that this evolution isn't limited to the water. Facebook is such a special place for different cultures to connect and now the evolution of surf will be shared beyond coastlines. I am looking forward to a great year, although I just got a bit more nervous thinking about a few more million people watching my heats."
Tim Greenberg, WSL's chief community officer said: "As a truly digital-first League, streaming the entirety of our season on Facebook speaks to the pioneering nature of our sport. With Facebook's scale, we can better serve even more fans by bringing the magic and drama of professional surfing directly to their feeds. It's an incredible opportunity to be at the forefront of sports media distribution."
