Rugby League WC to expand in 2013

Rugby League WC to expand in 2013- 24 Feb 2010 00:00:00

The International Rugby League has agreed to expand the World Cup to 14 teams in 2013.

The decision was made in Singapore when delegates from the Rugby League International Federation ruled in favour of the RFL’s proposal to expand the tournament.

Only 10 teams competed in the last tournament in Australia in 2008 and the event drew big crowds and a large global television audience of 19.2m.

12 teams will now be automatically entered for the 2013 World Cup, to be held in the UK, with two qualifying.

The tournament will be the first rugby league World Cup to be held in the UK since 2000, which was a 16-team event hampered by small crowds and bad weather and resulted in the Rugby Football League suffering a financial loss.
