Diack torn between IAAF and Senegal- 17 May 2010 00:00:00

Lamine Diack, president of world athletics governing body the IAAF, has stated that he would step down from his role if elected president of Senegal in 2012.

Diack, who has held the presidency of the IAAF since 1999, confirmed he will stand for re-election of the athletics body next year at Daegu, South Korea - venue for the 2011 World Championships.

The 77-year-old Diack also strongly suggested he will run for president of Senegal, saying nearly everyone in his homeland wants him to help the country make the transition back to democracy.

The current president, President Abdoulaye Wade, announced last year he would run for a third term.

Diack said that, if he becomes Senegal president, he would step down as IAAF leader and an interim president would serve out the remainder of his four-year term.
