More boxing events planned for SA- 7 Jul 2010 00:00:00
After hosting a successful boxing tournament dubbed ‘Blockbuster’, promoter Rodney Berman is planning more prize fights before the end of the year.
Berman staged a boxing tournament last month and there were doubts that it might be a failure because the World Cup had just kicked off.
But it attracted a large crowd at the Emperors Palace and now Berman wants to move a gear up and stage three more ‘Blockbusters’.
‘The 19th June tournament was a roaring success and I need to do more for the fans this year, I was inspired by boxing fans who were excited with what they saw in that tournament. It succeeded in spite of the fact that the World Cup was already under way.’ Berman said.
Berman also said that he will dedicate the next bouts to FIFA and the LOC: ‘We will use the next one to say “thank you” to Fifa, the LOC, government and everybody who played a role to bring the World Cup here.’
The boxing principal will team up with Jeff Ellis to co-promote a box-and-dine event at the Emperors Palace on 28th July.
Their aim is to raise funds to buy prosthetic arms for Sibusiso Mogale, a talented swimmer.
After the next tournament, Berman will go solo when his Golden Gloves Promotions present a fight between IBO world welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou and Bongani Mwelase on 18th September.
