SABC may stop showing boxing

SABC may stop showing boxing- 20 Jul 2010 00:00:00

Boxing could no longer be broadcast on SABC after the broadcaster spent over R30m during the World Cup.

As a result of this significant spend, the SABC reportedly doesn’t have sufficient funds to pay for boxing broadcasting rights, which can amount to up to R500 000, depending on the class of the fight.

About 36 tournaments are shown live by the SABC per season, which starts in April and ends in March.

But to date this boxing season, the broadcaster has only televised five tournaments, and the coverage is now expected to be decreased even further.

However, SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the SABC was still finalising its sports strategy.
