ASA decreases Soweto marathon money

ASA decreases Soweto marathon money- 30 Jul 2010 00:00:00

The ASA has confirmed that the 2012 Soweto Marathon is set to take place on 7th November.

However, the cash-strapped ASA interim board has said that prize money will not be as high as usual.

Soweto Marathon senior winners used to pocket R100,000 before the board was suspended by the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee.

But the new prize money will be announced soon, with the winners likely to get around R30,000.

ASA interim administrator Ray Mali said: ‘The Soweto Marathon is one road running event that must be protected and we have no money. But we are going ahead with it.’

‘We have applied for financial assistance from National Lottery Board and the Soweto Marathon is catered for in a meagre budget we operate on.’

‘Besides the prize money, everything else will stay the same. We are in the red, so it won't be possible for us to pay huge prizes as was the case in the past,’ he added.
