Cycling SA aims to rival Tour De France- 6 Aug 2010 00:00:00
Cycling South Africa has announced a revolutionary plan to hold a cycling event to rival the Tour de France.
The ‘Tour of South Africa’ will be scheduled for February next year and the nation's cycling governing body hopes it will become a major tournament on the international cycling calendar.
Cycling South Africa unveiled its new ‘2020 vision’ strategic plan for the next few years and will see Cycling SA taking back full control of the sport in the country.
South Africa has only hosted one previous international cycling event, but it was discontinued a decade ago.
Cycling South Africa general secretary Ciska Austin says the Tour races in 2010 and 2012 were already guaranteed.
As part of the 2020 vision a number of new national and international events covering all disciplines – road cycling, mountain biking, BMX, track cycling and Para-cycling – are planned, starting in 2011.
