ASA teams to change selection policy

ASA teams to change selection policy- 11 Aug 2010 00:00:00

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has set up specially designated teams to improve the level of communication between the national federation, coaches and officials.

The body has come under large criticism for its selection criteria and three board members have already resigned over the issue.

ASA has now formed three-person task teams at a conference for coaches and officials in Bloemfontein.

‘Following discussions between the 320 coaches and technical officials who attended the coaches symposium, the need for better communication between ASA and the coaches and officials was required,’ read an ASA statement.

ASA assistant administrator Richard Stander made changes to the selection policy this season – deciding that athletes would have to qualify for international championships during a six-week window period - with the aim of raising the level of performance at major events.

However, South Africa produced the nation’s worst performance in 10 years at the African Athletics Championships in Nairobi earlier this month – dropping to third in the medals table.
