SOCCER CITY TO BE 'FNB STADIUM'- 12 Aug 2010 00:00:00
Soccer City will continue to be called the FNB Stadium after the High Court ruled in the bank’s favour in a naming rights dispute.
The court upheld the bank's naming rights – meaning that the proposed ‘National Stadium’ name will not be used.
The financial institution had taken National Stadiums, which manages
Soccer City, to court to prevent it from changing the name of the
stadium.
The stadium was called the ‘FNB Stadium’ before the recent World Cup but it was changed to Soccer City during the tournament as FIFA did not allow the names of stadiums to include corporate brand names.
‘The bank is pleased with this outcome and will continue with its promotional and other programmes bearing the name FNB Stadium,’ said First National Bank spokesperson Derek Carstens.
