V8 Supercars set to join F1 race- 20 Aug 2010 00:00:00
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is reportedly working on a plan to bring in the Australian Touring Car category V8 Supercars as a support event for the 2011 Singapore F1 Grand Prix.
Martin Whitaker, a Briton who has long been involved in F1 and was until recently boss of the Bahrain track, is now CEO of the Australian series and has been in discussions with Ecclestone about the prospect.
Whitaker commented: ‘He would love to have us there in an earlier time slot. It's better for the spectators, better for the city and puts an extra four hours on to the show.’
The V8 race would probably not count for championship points due to the clashing TV rights of V8 in Australia.
Whitmaker admitted that the TV issue was ‘clearly one of the things we would have to work at’ before the Singapore round could be confirmed.
The ongoing negotiations mean that V8 Supercars has delayed until October the release of its 2011 calendar.
