CAPE TOWN TO HOST PSL DOUBLE-HEADER

CAPE TOWN TO HOST PSL DOUBLE-HEADER- 23 Aug 2010 00:00:00

The Cape Town World Cup stadium is set host an Absa Premiership football double-header to open the season this weekend - allaying any immediate fears that the stadium may turn into a white elephant.

The event kicks off on Friday 27th August with local team Vasco da Gama playing Orlando Pirates, followed by Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic.

Around 55,000 spectators are due to watch the games – meaning that it will be a sell-out after the capacity was decreased after the World Cup.

The event was finalized after the city’s Mayoral Committee agreed to pay R1.32m towards hosting the double-header.

The financial backing is part of the Cape Town Stadium's drive to reinstate ‘Football Fridays’ and secure its future.

Sail Stadefrance – the same company that runs the French national team’s stadium in Paris, operates the stadium.

Morne du Plessis chairman of Sail Stadefrance said: ‘The stadium is here to stay and we want Capetonians to enjoy it.

The Double Header event was conceived as a celebration of the spectacular success of the Cape Town Stadium as venue for the FIFA Soccer World Cup.’
