ASA 'HAMPERING' SASCOC BOARD PROGRESS- 2 Sep 2010 00:00:00
A senior official has reportedly accused four Athletics South Africa (ASA) provinces of hampering the progress made by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), that took control of the board from November last year.
A proposal to hold elections for the seven vacant board positions on the ASA was rejected by Limpopo, Griqualand West, Transkei and KwaZulu-Natal at a council meeting last week.
Therefore SASCOC's current intentions of stepping back from the ASA by the end of September have been blocked.
‘Some provinces vehemently opposed the proposal,' said the official who would not be named, ‘Even when it was pointed out ASA could be suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federations if there were no elections.’
The three suspended ASA board members and two workers who have not resigned are set to be charged in disciplinary hearings this week.
ASA interim administrator Ray Mali has also said that he will lay charges with the South African Police against anyone that benefited during the reign of the suspended ASA chief Leonard Chuene.
SASCOC was due to hold elections for a new board that was set to be in place by the end of this month.
