A match-fixing scandal may have been unearthed as a referee has been arrested for reportedly accepting bribery for a football match at the weekend.
Former Vodacom League referee Eric Lehong was arrested and charged with corruption after he was found with an alleged R1,000 bribe on Sunday.
Lehong, who is from Senwabarwana, reportedly solicited a bribe from officials of his hometown team Lebash Academy after they asked him to throw their SAFA Capricorn SAB League match against Mathote Elephants in Zebediela.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Mohale Ramatseba confirmed that Lehong was arrested on Sunday: ‘Lehong was charged with corruption and he appeared in the Magatle magistrate's court on Tuesday where he was granted R500 bail.’
Lehong’s case has been postponed until 30th September.
