SUPERSPORT TO AIR KLITSCHKO FIGHT

SUPERSPORT TO AIR KLITSCHKO FIGHT- 3 Sep 2010 00:00:00

SuperSport has secured the rights to broadcast the IBF world heavyweight championship fight between titleholder Wladimir Klitschko and Nigeria’s Samuel Peter.

The fight, taking place next week in Germany, is one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights of recent years, after last facing each other 5 years ago – a bout that Klitschko won.

The rights will be seen as a coup for SuperSport as terrestrial broadcaster SABC is usually the channel to air boxing in South Africa.

Boxing could no longer be broadcast on SABC after the broadcaster spent over R30m during the World Cup.

As a result of this significant spend, the SABC reportedly doesn’t have sufficient funds to pay for boxing broadcasting rights, which can amount to up to R500,000, depending on the class of the fight.

The fight will be broadcast on 11th September at 9.30pm on SuperSport1.
