SAFA & Libya confirm AFCON switch

SAFA & Libya confirm AFCON switch- 31 Aug 2011 00:00:00

The South African Football Association and the Football Federation of Libya have signed an agreement to switch the hosting of the 2013 and 2017 African Cup of Nations tournaments.

South Africa was awarded the 2017 African Cup of Nations competition, with Libya set to host the 2013 tournament.

However, following the recent political turmoil in Libya the two countries have agreed to swap their respective tournaments, with South Africa hosting the event in 2013.

The deal was first reported last week although SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani described the agreement as ‘premature’ – but the arrangement has now been confirmed.

The swap is still subject to ratification by the Confederation of African Football at its next Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, 28th September in Egypt.

The 2012 AFCON tournament will be hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
