SARU deadline approaching for new Boks coach- 19 Jan 2012 00:00:00
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) is fast approaching its own deadline of 27th January to name a new coach for the national team, and could even retain Peter de Villiers in a caretaker role for the upcoming three-Test series against England – according to media reports.
As it stands, the three contenders on the national bodies shortlist for the role are all under contract at other Rugby Unions.
According to Sport24, SARU hope to ratify the appointment by 27th January, after receiving the recommendations the day before.
If the right candidate cannot be secured by the deadline, De Villiers could be seen as an ideal, short-term alternative.
De Villiers has indicated on several occasions that he is willing to stay on to mentor his successor to ensure the succession process is handled properly.
While SARU have made no public acknowledgements, media reports indicate that Stormers coach Allister Coetzee, Bulls director of coaching Heyneke Meyer and Ireland assistant coach Gert Smal are rumoured to be on the shortlist, with De Villiers completing the quartet as the incumbent.
