Springbok blackout as negotiations break down

Springbok blackout as negotiations break down- 11 Jun 2012 00:00:00

The first Test of the series between the Springboks and England in Durban on Saturday was not shown by SABC after negotiations broke down. The game was due to go out as a delayed broadcast at 18:30 on SABC2.

However, an episode of Smallville was shown instead, resulting in outrage from rugby fans on social media networks.

The match kicked-off at 17:00, with South Africa victorious 22-17.

SABC spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago told the Weekend Argusthat events would often be placed in the TV guide to reserve space, even when the right to broadcast them were still being negotiated.

Kganyago added that the SABC was hopeful of obtaining the rights to the second and third Tests of the series.

The second Test will be played in Johannesburg on Saturday, with the final match in the series scheduled for Port Elizabeth on 23rd June.
