Ugandan cricket secures new sponsor- 12 Jul 2012 00:00:00
The Mehta Group has agreed a new one-year deal to become the principal sponsor of the Uganda Cricket Association.
The partnership will see the Indian-based corporation support the Ugandan men's and women's national teams ahead of their participation in the World Cricket League and Africa Regional T20 in 2013.
According to Ugandan daily New Vision the group has committed US$80,000, which will be used to fund players' pay, kits and equipment and the restoration of the Lugazi Oval - a former cricket ground which has since been converted into a football pitch - as well as a school's programme in Lugazi.
The men's national team will also travel to India for a training camp with the Kolkata Knight Riders, the reigning IPL champions who are also sponsored by the Metha Group.
UCA chairman Richard Mwami said the news made for "an important day" for Ugandan cricket.
